About Local 17
Serving as a major manufacturing and transportation hub – most notably steel available for distribution among the Great Lakes – Cleveland remains one of the most livable cities in America. Local 17 continues its long tradition of building the region from erecting the steel for office buildings and bridges to serving the various manufacturing plants and mills.
Local 17 encompasses 10 counties throughout northeastern Ohio – All of Cuyahoga, Lake and Lorain and most of Ashtabula, Erie, Geauga, Huron, Medina, Portage and Summit Counties.. We are more than 1600 members strong who are well-trained and ready to work with and for our signatory contractors.
We are a Local Union chapter of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Ironworkers. We are also members of the Southern Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia District Council and have established many leadership roles in various other organizations throughout northeastern Ohio.
You’ll find our work at the heart of a building’s structure. Our members erect the structural framework of buildings and also are essential in other projects, such as erecting bridges, reinforcing steel, ornamental ironwork and installing precast concrete. Our skill set includes welding, sheeting and rigging all of which are taught by certified instructors in our training facility.
Local 17 uses its special skill set to give back to the community, donating time and labor to projects throughout the region.
